Ubuntu Web Hosting Security Checklist for Administrators

Review identities, exposed services, updates, customer boundaries and recovery preparation on an Ubuntu hosting server.

Securing a hosting server is a routine, not a single setting. Access, updates, customer boundaries and recovery all matter. This checklist helps you review those areas without assuming that a panel replaces the administrator.

Know who can change the server

Inventory administrators, SSH keys, panel owners and automation credentials. Revoke access through the normal process when it is no longer needed. Individual identities make actions attributable; a shared long password still prevents useful attribution.

Use supported multifactor authentication for privileged interfaces. Keep recovery methods private and test recovery without weakening ordinary authentication. Include the hosting provider account, because it may control server resets or console access.

Review exposed services

Decide which services must be public, customer-accessible or administrator-only. Web, mail and DNS hosting have legitimate network requirements. Generic advice to close every port can break the service.

The following is read-only. Elevated permissions may be required. Plan any later firewall change with out-of-band access; this guide supplies no commands that could lock you out.

Read-only network and firewall inspection
ss -lntup
sudo ufw status verbose

Maintain applications as well as the panel

Track OS, PHP, panel, extension and application updates. Back up, plan rollback and test representative workloads after maintenance. Updating the panel does not update every customer plugin or remove a compromised application.

Review file ownership, account permissions and effective limits. Keep status endpoints private and backups outside public document roots. Malware scanning and filtering provide signals and controls, not guaranteed protection.

Prepare for an incident

Maintain verified backups, recovery information and a dependency inventory. Decide who approves disruptive actions and how customers will be informed. Preserve evidence while respecting customer privacy.

EzePanel’s security, sessions, Helper Integrity and monitoring workflows complement host and application maintenance. Revisit access and recovery after migrations, staffing changes and major releases, rather than treating security as a one-time installation task.

Check recovery access before changing access policy

Confirm provider-console access and a working second SSH session before restricting remote access. Record who needs administrative access and remove credentials with no remaining purpose. Store recovery material outside the server.

Match firewall rules to the actual hosting stack instead of copying an unrelated recipe. Web, mail, DNS and management have different network requirements. Limit administration where practical while preserving intentional public services.

Include application code in the security review

A maintained OS cannot compensate for abandoned CMS plugins or leaked database passwords. Inventory applications and their update owners. Remove unused software and scope file/PHP access to the intended hosting account.

Use HTTPS for management. Keep secrets out of screenshots, shared shell history and public diagnostics. A temporary phpinfo page can expose configuration; use scoped checks and remove temporary public probes after use.

Prepare evidence before an incident

Know where authentication, web and application logs live, who may read them and retention limits. Minimize sensitive log contents. Keep independent backups and a process for revoking compromised access without destroying evidence.

Recheck maintenance, access and recoverability when adding customers or changing services. A dashboard score can organize review; it is not certification that a server is invulnerable.

Verify security from both sides of the account boundary

Use a non-production account to check ordinary website, database and mailbox tasks with the permissions a customer actually receives. Then review administrative access separately. A strong administrator password is not proof that one hosting account cannot access another.

For web application filtering, preserve evidence about the specific rejected request before changing a rule. A legitimate upload failure and a hostile request can both produce an HTTP error. Do not disable protections globally to make one workflow pass; review the narrow cause and confirm the legitimate application action afterward.
